On Tuesday, October 10th, 2023, we hosted a virtual event on the intersectionality of Housing & Health, coinciding with World Homeless Day. The event was joined by the MPP and medical doctor, Dr. Adil Shamji. This webinar highlighted the impact of precarious housing status on newcomer’s physical & mental health, as well as exploring the importance of affordable housing in order for our communities to be more welcoming for newcomers. By focusing on the intersections of precarious housing, homelessness, and the current state of housing on health outcomes, Dr. Adil Shamji interweaved his medical knowledge with his experience working with 11 shelters within the system to provide a comprehensive overview to identify why housing is an important social determinant of health, and how an individual’s housing status is detrimental to their health and mental health outcomes according to medical science. This virtual event is an initiative by the TNLIP/HHAC Task Group: a part of the Health & Wellbeing Work Group action plan for 2022-2023 which looks at housing and food security as important social determinants of health.
