In March 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ontario Ministry of Health (MOH) issued a directive to extend funding for all medically necessary hospital care to residents without health insurance. An uninsured person is someone who lacks private or provincial health insurance and most often impacts those without residency status, people waiting for permanent residency, foreign workers between contracts, and international students not covered by their universities or colleges. Members of the Health Network for Uninsured Clients (HNUC) have observed significant improvements to healthcare access for uninsured clients while the MOH directive was in place.
As of April 1, 2023 The Ontario government ended the program that provided free-of-charge health-care services to uninsured people, something doctors say is extremely concerning for marginalized communities. Read the report and its recommendations to find out more.
